2026 Brainerd Lakes Area Fall Events & Local Activity Guide
Fall in the Brainerd Lakes Area has a rhythm all its own.
Summer may get most of the attention, but locals know there is a lot to love about the stretch between Labor Day and the first snowfall. The lakes get quieter, the mornings turn crisp and familiar drives through Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Crosslake, Pine River and Breezy Point become some of the best fall color routes in the state.
It is also one of the most community-centered times of year. Downtowns fill with art, barbecue and live music. Local businesses bring out the chili pots. Families head to hayrides, craft fairs and Halloween traditions. And on the weekends without a festival, there is still plenty of reason to get outside.

September Fall Events
Arts Off 84 Art Crawl
September 5–6, 2026 | 9:00 AM–4:00 PM | Pine River to Longville

Start September with a scenic drive and the work of more than 100 area artists and makers. The Arts Off 84 Art Crawl stretches along Highway 84 between Pine River and Longville, with six stops featuring pottery, paintings, jewelry, woodworking, fiber arts and other handcrafted pieces.
Local note: Give yourself time between stops. The drive is part of the experience, especially as the first hints of fall begin to show along the route.
The Babinski Foundation Fall Festival & 10-Year Anniversary

The Babinski Foundation is celebrating ten years of animal rescue with its biggest Fall Festival yet. The day begins with a 5K Wilderness Trek and puppy yoga, followed by a free pancake breakfast. The schedule also includes food trucks, live music, a craft fair, farmers market, flea market, hayrides, family activities, a backyard barbecue competition and plenty of opportunities to support the shelter.
Many activities are free, and proceeds from select activities help care for stray and abandoned animals in our community.
Pine River Heritage Days

Heritage Days is a longstanding Pine River tradition and an easy way to spend a fall day close to home. Explore the community celebration, walk or bike a section of the Paul Bunyan State Trail and stop into the locally owned shops and restaurants downtown.
Nisswa Fall Festival & Smokin’ Hot BBQ Challenge

Nisswa’s signature fall celebration returns for its 51st year alongside the 21st annual Smokin’ Hot BBQ Challenge. Start with breakfast benefiting the Nisswa Fire Department, then spend the day between the artisan and crafters market, KIDZONE, bean bag and bocce tournaments, live entertainment and downtown businesses.
The barbecue competition is the centerpiece, with teams putting their best ribs to the test before the public gets a chance to taste them. Wyld Ryce will close out the day with an outdoor concert.
Local note: Downtown parking fills quickly. Arrive early for breakfast, then stay and make a day of it.
Crosslake Days

Crosslake Days is one of the area’s true fall staples, bringing three days of events to businesses and gathering places throughout town. The 2026 schedule includes the Lost Chili Pepper Hunt, Loon & Lakes Trivia, arts and crafts, live music, the Chili Cook-Off, cornhole, a loon-calling contest and the Crosslake Ace Hardware Street Dance.
Saturday is the main festival day. More than 65 artisans will be at The Log Church from 9:00 AM–4:00 PM, with chili served at participating locations beginning at noon and the street dance running from 5:00–9:00 PM.
Local note: Crosslake Days is meant to be explored. Check the full schedule first, choose two or three can’t-miss stops and leave room to discover what participating businesses have planned along the way.
OKBOBBERFEST

Follow Snarky’s Hideout for current details
A favorite local Oktoberfest tradition is growing into a city-wide Pequot Lakes celebration. The first OKBOBBERFEST builds on Snarky’s longtime Snarktoberfest with local breweries, food trucks, live music and participating downtown businesses.
Big Axe Brewing, Rendezvous Brewing and Cuyuna Brewing are among the local names expected to join the festivities, with Norman’s Bait & Tackle Choir and Third Wheel currently scheduled to perform.
Because this is the first year for the expanded event, watch for added details as September approaches.
OCTOBER FALL EVENTS
Gull Lake Oktoberfest

Gull Lake Oktoberfest returns for a day of seasonal fun around the lake. Organized through Gull Lake Events, the celebration also supports local causes—its community events have raised more than $400,000 for area charities over the years.
Early October is often an especially beautiful time around Gull Lake, so plan a little extra time for the drive and a stop at one of the area’s local restaurants or businesses.
Harvest Moon Festival

For an evening out, the Harvest Moon Festival combines beer and wine tasting, food and live entertainment at the Moondance Fairgrounds. The 2026 music lineup includes Timmy Haus and The Fabulous Armadillos.
Crosslake Oktoberfest

Crosslake is adding a second reason to gather this fall. Oktoberfest arrives over MEA weekend with seasonal food, drinks, music and activities planned throughout the community. This is a newer event, so check the official page as the weekend gets closer for a complete schedule and participating locations.
Ruttger’s Oktoberfest

This longstanding celebration at Ruttger’s Bay Lake Resort brings German-inspired food, live music, shopping and family activities to the east side of the Brainerd Lakes Area.
Local note: Pair it with a stop in Crosby and a walk, hike or ride through the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. Even after peak color, the red-dirt trails and late-season landscape are worth the drive.
Northwoods Fall Festival

The Northwoods Fall Festival brings a full weekend of family-friendly activities to Breezy Point. Saturday’s current lineup includes horse-drawn hayrides, face painting, a candy crawl and costume contest, pumpkin painting, fall crafts, live music, games, bonfires and s’mores, plus Paws + Pumpkins with The Babinski Foundation.
The event is open to locals as well as resort guests, making it a useful option for families looking for MEA weekend plans close to home.
Halloween Around Brainerd & Baxter

October calendars continue to fill with haunted trails, fall markets, pumpkin activities and community trick-or-treat events. Annual favorites have included the Northland Arboretum Haunted Trail, Haunted Hidden Hollows at Paul Bunyan Land and Halloween activities in Downtown Brainerd.
Many 2026 dates are announced closer to October, so check local chamber and organizer calendars before making plans.
LOCAL WAYS TO ENJOY FALL
The best fall days here do not always need a formal itinerary. These are a few simple ways to make the most of the season whether you have an open afternoon or a full weekend.
Follow the color through lake country
There is no single required fall-color route. A loop through Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Breezy Point and Crosslake offers lake views, wooded roads and plenty of places to stop. For a longer drive, continue north through Pine River toward Longville or head east toward Crosby and Cuyuna.
Walk or bike the Paul Bunyan State Trail
With trail access in Brainerd, Nisswa, Pequot Lakes and Pine River, the Paul Bunyan State Trail is one of the easiest ways to experience fall color without planning a full-day outing. Choose a downtown trailhead, walk or ride for as long as you like and finish with coffee or lunch nearby.
Explore Cuyuna after the summer rush
Cooler temperatures make fall one of the best times to hike or mountain bike at Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area. The overlooks, red-dirt trails and mine lakes look especially striking against changing leaves.
Play one more round of golf
The Brainerd Lakes Area’s golf season does not end with Labor Day. Cooler days, lighter crowds and fall scenery make September and early October a favorite time for local golfers. Area options include The Pines and The Preserve at Grand View Lodge, The Classic and Pine Beach courses at Madden’s, Deacon’s Lodge, Whitebirch, Cragun’s Legacy Courses, Crosswoods, Whitefish Golf Club and Golden Eagle.
Always check late-season tee times and course conditions before heading out.
Make the most of quieter lakes
Fall fishing, paddling and an unhurried cruise can be some of the best lake days of the year. Water temperatures drop quickly, however, so dress for the conditions, wear a life jacket and check the forecast before going out.
Revisit the downtowns you pass all summer
Fall is a good time to slow down and spend a few hours in the communities that make this area feel like home. Browse locally owned shops in Nisswa, grab coffee in Pequot Lakes, have lunch in Crosslake, explore downtown Brainerd or make a dinner stop around Gull Lake.
Take on the practical side of fall
Around here, fall also means dock and lift schedules, blowing out irrigation, checking the furnace, cleaning gutters and getting cabins ready for colder weather. It may not make the highlight reel, but taking care of these details early leaves more room to enjoy the last warm days of the season.
WHEN WILL FALL PEAK IN THE BRAINERD LAKES AREA?
Peak color changes each year based on temperature, rainfall and overnight conditions. Late September into early October is typically a strong window in the Brainerd Lakes Area, with communities farther north often changing first.
The Minnesota DNR’s fall color finder is the best resource for current conditions once the season begins. Rather than waiting for one supposedly perfect weekend, watch the weekly reports and enjoy the progression—the early patches of gold and the late-season rusty oaks are part of fall here, too.

Fall Is Part of What Makes Living Here Special
Fall in the Brainerd Lakes Area is more than a short season between summer and winter. It is school activities and Friday-night lights, community fundraisers, familiar faces at the chili cook-off, quiet trails and the practical work of preparing a lake home or piece of land for what comes next.
It is also a good reminder that the Lakes Area is not simply a place to visit. Pequot Lakes, Nisswa, Crosslake, Breezy Point, Pine River, Brainerd, Baxter and the surrounding lake communities are places where people build businesses, raise families, put down roots and enjoy a different pace of life in every season.
