Outdoorsman Update: Issue 13

Mid Winter Outdoor Update: The BLA is an outdoorsman’s paradise.

...EVEN IN THE WINTER! ICE FISHING, SNOWMOBILING, PREDATOR HUNTING, SNOWSHOeING AND SHED HUNTING ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITES!

The local fishing reports are still reporting good crappie bites at evening/night, as well as some walleye. Ice fishing can get a little tougher during the middle of winter. Try moving out a little deeper or finding some good structure to set up on. During the day, one of my favorite things to do with a group of friends or family is set up a bunch of tip ups in the shallows. I like to use big suckers and shiners for a good pike and bass bite — and if you are lucky sometimes a walleye!

There's tons of outdoor events happening in our area this winter — including a few fishing tournaments coming up: Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza, Cuyuna Lakes Annual Ice Fishing Contest, and "Fishing for Ducks" tournament on Mille Lacs to name a few. Check out our winter events blog for more info.

→  Behind the dirt tip: Spring prep starts now when it comes to land management. One of my favorite things to do in the spring other than food plots is planting new trees. It's such an easy and cost effective way to improve your habitat and overall property value, as well as looks. I planted over 55 trees in my 3 acre lot last spring, to give you an idea. You can order trees from the county soil and water program here. I will even come out to your property to show you the best spots to plant for wildlife, or plant them for you for a small charge!

→ Land Services promotion: Book a consulting package with me through January 31st, 2023 and receive a free trail camera and food plot seed! Spots are limited so don’t wait to book. Contact me directly to inquire!

FEATURED RECIPE: Venison Bacon Bites
One of my favorite apps to bring to a party or gathering is venison bacon bites. Let me know if you try them out!

Ingredients:

1.5 lbs of Venison

1 pack of bacon

¼ cup olive oil

¼ cup soy sauce

¼ cup worcestershire sauce

¼ cup balsamic vinegar

3 cloves garlic pressed or finely minced

1 teaspoon mustard any kind

½ teaspoon black pepper

¼ cup barbecue sauce

Directions:

1. Excluding the venison, mix all ingredients above in a bowl until well combined.
2. Cut up venison back straps into 1 inch cubes.
3. Add venison chunks to your marinade mixture and cover, put in the fridge to sit for 1-2 hours.
4. Cut bacon strips in half and roll the venison cubes up and use a toothpick to hold together.
5. Preheat your pellet grill or oven to 450 degrees and cook for 10-12 minutes or until meat reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
6. Lastly, glaze BBQ sauce over the bacon for a finishing touch.
7. Enjoy!

THanks for reading! Catch you on the ice or in the woods next month!
