Homes for sale in the Gulf Lakes area offer a range of designs and styles, all well crafted to keep you warm and comfortable in the snow, or for enjoying the summer sun. Some characteristic features of Gulf Lakes homes include large, spacious lots, lake access, and lots of storage for boats, hobbies, and vacation toys.
Interior and exterior details make extensive use of the abundant wood. Raw, knotty pine and clear-finish boards are common throughout, adding a warm texture to cabinets, doors, roofs, and furniture.
Many homes also boast large fireplaces in stone or brick, often with exposed interior chimneys extending upwards into great rooms topped with exposed-beam cathedral ceilings. These living rooms are the center pieces of open-concept layouts, efficiently equipped with bars, recreation spaces, kitchen islands, and added mezzanine levels.
Exteriors are completed with wrap-around decks, faced with tall windows extending right up to the second-story eaves. These windows provide ample natural light in the summer, and peaceful views of the snowy landscapes in the winter.
Properties in the Gull Lakes Chain are also great for entertaining friends and family, with extra guest rooms being common.
Comprising 8 lakes, two bays, and a network of connecting channels and waterways, the Gull Chain of lakes is one of central Minnesota's premier outdoor and recreation destinations.
The Gull Chain covers over 13,000 acres within Cass and Crow Wing Counties, forming part of the Crow Wing River Watershed which eventually feeds into the mighty Mississippi River.
Lakes included in the chain are:
Gull Lake itself is located less than 20 minutes from Brainerd, and 2 hours from Minneapolis to the south. Raised 5 feet by the construction of Gull Lake Dam in 1912, Gull Lake is now 80 feet at its deepest point. Overall, the lake is roughly 8 miles long and 3 miles across at its widest, covering an area of more than 9,000 acres. The lake's southernmost points are enclosed by Wilson's and Steamboat Bay.
Residents around the Gull lakes care about their environment and undertake a number of initiatives to ensure the health of the area's natural surroundings.
The Gull Chain of Lakes Association is a group of volunteers who seek to preserve water quality and promote safe and sustainable practices.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources also actively monitors fish populations and restocks the lakes as needed.
Fish species in good supply include:
The shores of the Gull Lakes are shared by three communities: Nisswa, Lake Shore, and East Gull Lake.
Nisswa - Northeast of Gull Lake, running along Highway 371, the town of Nisswa is a popular destination for families due to its many festivals, and events held throughout the year. The highlight for many are the weekly turtle races held during the summer. Nisswa is also known for its amazing retail options, so stop by to pick up some gourmet coffee, chocolate, or craft beers.
Lake Shore - This small town sits at the north-western end of Gull Lake, and encompasses both Lake Margaret and Upper Gill Lake. The commercial area of the town extends across the waterways connecting these three lakes. To the west, the town includes wood and farmland.
East Gull Lake - at Gull Lake's south-eastern end, East Gull Lake is home to a number of beautiful resorts and golf courses. In addition to Gull Lake, Kavanaugh's, Madden's, and Cragun's Resorts, the town also has a small airport for easy access. Events and Attractions stuff?
As with the Brainerd Lakes Area in general, the lakes of the Gull Chain are excellent destinations for range of recreational activities like skiing, skating, snowmobiling, fishing, hiking, and boating. However, the size and extent of this system of lakes makes it a highlight for outdoor enthusiasts in the region.
For example, Gull Lake is host to the annual Ice Fishing Extravaganza which sees more than ten thousand ice fishermen compete across more than 20,000 holes drilled into the ice. All proceeds collected by the Host, the Brainerd Jaycees go to local charities and organizations.
Resorts and golf courses complete the package, offering the best in comfort and luxury amenities to those who want a break from the outdoor adventures.
