Outdoorsman Update: Issue 19 | It's Bucktober

Hello Fall!

THE TIME OF YEAR THAT ALL OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS WAIT FOR IS FINALLY HERE.

... And it's in full force! Deer, bear, waterfowl, grouse, and pheasant are open for the fall. One of my favorite parts of living in the B.L.A is the access to the thousands of acres of public hunting land in the area.

I kicked off the season by punching a bonus tag on a doe right off the bat, as well as my first antelope. I recently traveled to South Dakota to chase Antelope and was not disappointed. After 2 blown stalks in the morning, this one came together! I belly crawled on the side of the hill to get more cover and close the distance. Soon I was surrounded by a whole herd of does and not far behind was this stud! A perfectly placed arrow at 65 yards made for a short-track job! Safe to say I am hooked on western hunting!

BEHIND THE DIRT TIP →  Get mobile! I am a huge fan of doing hang and hunts this time of the year. If you are seeing a lot of activity in a particular area or have found out where your target buck is bedding/feeding or making scrapes, hang a stand and hunt it! I have had a lot of unexpected success with this tactic! Also, don’t be afraid to start doing some soft grunts to get a buck's attention. Come rut time, patterns will change!

Bucktober is in motion and the woods are starting to change! Scrapes and rubs are appearing every day, bucks fighting, and new bucks are showing up on camera. The pre-rut gets me just as fired up as the rut. Great opportunities can be had at Bucks as the hormones increase daily.

Three new items I am using this year:

REK XP broadheads

The hardest-hitting, most accurate, best penetrating expandable broad-head I have ever used. I have had 2 harvests this fall with them already. One including a 65-yard shot blowing through both shoulders on an antelope, getting a full pass through buried in the dirt!

Browning DEFENDER PRO SCOUT MAX EXTREME HD

Cell cameras are a huge tool in my hunting. I have switched to mostly all cell cameras. This new Browning camera takes and sends the clearest pictures I have ever had from a cell camera. Each picture comes to your phone in HD. I have been very pleased with it so far!

Tactacam 6.0

Self-filming can be fun but challenging. I have been a huge fan of having a POV camera on my bow to see exactly where my arrow is hitting. This allows for almost instant footage right in the tree stand to tell you the next steps right away. I review all shots and footage before tracking. It is an awesome tool to have, and fun to have the kill shot right on your phone to show your buddies.

Finally, there's nothing better than sharing a love for the outdoors with my kids. I like to involve them any chance I can!

Any questions on land or products? Feel free to reach out! See you in the woods and catch you next month for…

Chasing November!
