Outdoorsman Update: Jordan Yira Issue 4 Late Winter Edition

February came and went in the blink of an eye-and brought all kinds of weather with it.

One of my favorite things about winter in the BLA is the amount of winter outdoor opportunities!

There is still a lot of great ice fishing to be done. Anglers make sure to get your new license on March 1st for the new upcoming fishing season! Some of my favorite fishing occurs in the late ice season. The pan fishing opportunities are abundant and you should have a little warmer weather to enjoy! As we start to shift toward spring, it’s a great time to walk your hunting property and do some scouting. Hunters can find a lot of great signs and maybe even some antlers. It’s never too early to think about land management tactics for the fall. I enjoy marking out new potential food plots and bedding areas. Along with areas to plant more trees for cover!

Be sure to check out these great local events happening this weekend:

  • February 25th-27th: Gull Lake Frozen Flop + Frozen Fore February 26th 8:00am-4:00pm.
  • Nisswa 100 snowmobile race in Hole in the Day Bay - Hosted by Cor PowerSports Race Series + The Nisswa Chamber: A mixture of lake, ditches, woods, & fields and approx. 100 miles in length.
  • February 26th Ice Tee Open at Moonlite Bay: 11am-4pm Bring your own golf clubs, the ball will be provided.

Fun fact: Minnesota has a new game fish species for 2022: The Burbot (eelpout)

Pro tip: Winter and spring make an excellent time to do some predator control on your property.

Featured Recipe: Slow-cooked Grouse | One of my favorite and easiest ways to cook grouse is this method!

Take a fresh grouse that’s gutted and cleaned. And put in the slow cooker with the following:

1. 3 cans of cream of mushroom soup

2. 1 cup of water

3. Add carrots, onions

4. Add pepper or seasoning of choice

5. Let slowly cook for 6-8 hours on low adding water if needed

6. Enjoy your field fresh grouse

See ya in the Spring!
