Outdoorsman Update: Jordan Yira Issue 5

Spring is here! Ice anglers are getting some good fishing in with these nice warm temps. The bite report is still hot in many areas for panfish and tip ups for big pike.

Turkey season is right around the corner! Season A kicks off April 13 and goes until the 19th. Then following are seasons B-F, giving hunters 6 days for their chosen time period. Hunters have until May 31st to bag a turkey. Early season turkey hunting is one of my favorite things to do. Hearing those birds gobbling in the morning will get any hunter fired up! Behind the Dirt- Land management tips from Jordan Yira: Early spring is a great opportunity to get food plots started and established. Frost seeding is one of the easiest methods to do. This method works great for those areas with already exposed dirt and minimal debris. Frost seeding is based off the freeze that occurs at night and the thaw that occurs during the day. This naturally lets the soil expand and suck up the seeds into the dirt. Giving the seed great soil contact so it can germinate. My favorite time to do this is when the snow is at minimum. Seeds and a broadcast spreader is all one needs. Clover and chicory make an excellent choice for frost seeding along with alfalfa. My favorite mixes to use are a combination of “Hot Chick and Comeback Kid” made by Domain food plots. I have had great luck with these mixes. Check out this great article on frost seeding by my good friends at Domain!

Wild game recipe:

Wild Turkey breast One of the simplest and my favorite ways to eat wild turkey, is to simply season and grill!

1. Make sure all feathers are off the breast. Season with your favorite seasoning (Mine is Traeger Fin and Feather).

2. Pre heat grill or pellet grill

3. Throw on grill until breast gets to 170-175 degrees

4. Squeeze a fresh lemon over the breast and enjoy with your favorite side!
