Outdoorsman Update: Jordan Yira Issue 1

Local hunting fanatic Jordan Yira shares his expertise in all things wildlife for our November Update!

As the temps start to drop and the snow starts to fall… A hunter can still expect some late season success. From the reports the 3rd week of gun hunting was tough in the 604. Luckily, hunters in zone 604 and surrounding areas still have an opportunity to fill a tag with muzzleloader season coming up. For all of you archery hunters, you have until New Year’s Eve to capitalize. We still can expect to see rutting activity as some does go into heat a little later on.

Bird hunters can still continue to chase migrating waterfowl and have great luck. Grouse hunters can also find thunder chickens throughout the Northwoods Timbers.

November is a magical time to be in the outdoors, whether that’s 20 ft up in a tree or out on an icy body of water chasing waterfowl. As the temps drop the hard water season awaits!

*Pro Tip: As winter approaches, deer heavily rely on food sources. Bucks will be hitting food sources hard recovering from the rut and preparing for winter. Hunters can expect greater results over any greens or grains they may still find!

*Fun Fact: Blaze-orange or bright-red clothing became mandatory for deer hunting in 1984 in Minnesota; blaze orange alone was required starting in 1994. In recent years, blaze pink was added as legal outerwear for deer hunting.

Favorite Venison Jerky:

• I LB. THINLY-SLICED MEAT

• 3 TBSP Favorite jerky rub (Mine is Traeger jerky rub)

• 1/2 C. SOY SAUCE IC. APPLE JUICE

Combine rub, soy sauce, and apple juice and pour over sliced meat. Marinate for 8 hours or overnight so meat is thoroughly flavored. When ready to cook, place meat on smoker for 4-5 hours. Dig in and enjoy!
